Princess Melilot c. 1916 - 1917

Princess Melilot is a character from the story ‘The Bound Princess’ in Laurence Hausman’s book ‘The Field of Clover’ (Melilot is also a plant, known as ‘sweet clover’). In Hausman’s story, a spell is cast over the princess by her step-sisters, who are jealous of her beauty and charm. She is first turned into a rose-tree and then turned back into herself but is rooted to the ground in an enchanted sleep, unable to move or speak. The hero of the story carries out tasks to break the spell, and on waking, the Princess marries him.

Moonstone Necklace - c. 1900

For Liberty & Co. a necklace of gold, moonstones and enamel in the form of five pendants on a gold chain. Moonstones were a favourite stone of the period, often used in jewellery worn by suffragettes.

A floral painted ceramic box

I developed this line of painted pottery from 1920, and it was one of my main sources of income. I purchased the ceramics in 'biscuit' state then painted on my designs and sent the ware back to the ceramic manufacturer for glazing.

This floral painted ceramic box has a seperate lid with the form of a bee as its handle. The box has the verses 'Kissing is out of Fashion / When the Whin is out of Blossom', around the top of the four sides of the box. It has my marks on the base - a rabbit, a green gate and the initials 'JMK'.

Portrait of Jessie M King by Lena Alexander (1899-1983)

Lena Alexander trained at Glasgow School of Art and Edinburgh School of Art before moving to Kirkcudbright in 1939. She worked primarily in pastel, sometimes watercolour, painting flowers, portraits, and views of Paris and Venice. A member of the 'Scottish Society of Women Artists', Alexander exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. She died in 1983, and was one of the last surviving members of the 'Kirkcudbright School'.

Memories by Robert Louis Stevenson, 1919

Jessie M. King was commissioned by Foulis to design covers for a series of "Envelope Books" intended for gift giving. This one was orginally published in 1912 with Japanese Vellum Wrappers. This is the Foulis 1919 reprint with King's signature on the front wrapper. The colours are brighter than on the 1912 version HERE.
